All homeowners and private tenants qualify for a Free Government Loft Insulation Grant regardless of financial circumstances

provided there is no more than 100mm (4 inches) of existing loft insulation.

Loft Insulation Grants are still available to everyone throughout South Wales?

On 1st April 2017 the way that Loft Insulation is funded changed, and not every home will qualify for totally free loft insulation.

However, everyone will qualify for some level of Insulation Grant Funding.

We do of course undertake work where the customer simply pays for the job where no funding is available, i.e. where the existing insulation is greater that 100mm.

How is Loft Insulation Funded?

The Government have (for at least another couple of years) massive European targets to reduce Carbon Emissions. The Government, as Governments do, passed the buck and they gave a Legal Obligation to the Gas and Electricity companies to reduce Carbon Emissions.

In April 2017, the system was simplified and an energy assessment is no longer required in order to calculate the amount of Carbon Emissions saved by insulating a loft. Instead the Government have "deemed" an amount of Carbon Emission savings for each type of property - terraced, semi-detached, 2 bed, 3 bed etc.

The problem with this system is that you get the same level of funding whether you have no insulation or 100mm (4 inches) of insulation. So those with 100mm will benefit at the cost of those who have no loft insulation whatsoever.

A 3 bedroomed semi-detached house, heated by mains gas, will get about £175 in funding, which is about 50% of the cost. The same 3 bedroomed semi heated by electric storage heaters or coal would get a full 100% grant.

Is my Loft suitable for insulating?

We carryout a thorough survey of the loft space to ascertain it's suitability. Any findings or concerns are then discussed with the customer. These could include but not limited to - damp, ceiling cracks, high amp cables, downlighters, wasps nests, evidence of rodents, condensation etc.

If Bats are present, you cannot have your loft insulated - they are a protected species, and must not be disturbed. However, the loft can be insulated during their "away period".

How is Loft insulation installed?

We don't use the "itchy stuff" any more.

We use what can be described as a "quilt" which the manufactures state "you could comfortably sleep on".

The rolls are brought into the house in "poly bags" and taken into the loft, where the insulation is removed from the bags.

The first layer of insulation is then laid between the joists, and a second layer is then laid at right angles to the first layer, that is across the joists. The recommended depth of loft insulation is 270mm ( 11 inches).

Our technicians will then ensure that there is sufficient ventilation within the loft space. That is basically it. Each loft will have it's own set of circumstances such as downlighters, electicity cables etc., but these would have been noted during the initial survey and discussed with the customer.

An average semi-detached house would be completed in less than 2 hours, the empty bags removed and no mess to be seen.

We do not install "rafter" insulation. There are 2 main reasons for this.

Firstly, I just don't see the point of it. Yes, it stops the heat from leaving the house, but does not stop the heat from leaving the "living space". It only serves to heat the loft space.

However our second reason is somewhat scary. Rafter insulation normally takes the form of "foam insulation" and this forms a bond with the roof. I had read horror stories online where a problem had arisen with a tile letting in water etc and because of the bond formed by the foam insulation the whole roof had to be removed. In August 2016 I had a call from a customer in Whitchurch, Cardiff where that exact same situation had arisen, and he had to have the roof replaced at a cost of £7,000.

Loft Insulation is supposed to save you money not cost you £1,000's.
