EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION
HOW IS EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION FUNDED?
There is no specific funding schemes available for External Wall Insulation, it is basically treated the same way as Cavity Wall Insulation and Loft Insulation, that is through ECO (the Energy Companies Obligation) funding. The average semi detached house, built of stone or solid brick, heated by mains gas, would qualify for a Grant of only about £1,000 or less. A company offering External Wall Insulation though ECO funding will have a mountain of paperwork to complete to collect the Grant from the funders, they will have to pay extra fees associated with registration to the scheme (which does not make them any better at what they do), and because a cetain "i" wasn't dotted or a certain "t" not crossed by a certain date, they may not even be able to claim the Grant at all - it is "red tape" - at its worst. There is only one solution to these potential problems, and that is higher prices. It is a fact that prices for External Wall Insulation are higher when Grants are involved. We have therefore taken the decision to not install External Wall Insulation under any Grant Scheme when the property is heated by mains gas, the savings of doing this to the customer would be greater than the value of the grant. If the property is heated by electricity or coal we will look at each case on its own merits because there would be considerably more Carbon Emission savings, and therefore, a greater grant. The cost of external wall insulation for an average semi-detached house is about £6,500.
WHAT IS EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION? External Wall Insulation (EWI) is also know as Solid Wall Insulation (SWI) and is an insulation system that is applied to the outside of the outside walls of a house. The first BBA Certificate for EWI was issued in 1987, and Councils in particular, have used it extensively to insulate and improve the appearance of their housing stock. It has therefore been well tested for the past 30 years. Although External Wall Insulation can be applied to Cavity Walls, it is an expensive alternative to Cavity Wall Insulation. It is about 7 times the price. As the photograph below shows, External Wall Insulation consists of a number of "layers". The first layer is the "insulation" layer - normally mineral wool or expanded polystyrene. This is then covered by a reinforcing mesh secured by a coat of insulating render. The final layer consists of a coat of render in the colour or finish of your choice.
The main benefits of External Wall insulation are: 1. Reducing your Fuel Bills. External Wall Insulation can significantly reduce your fuel bills. Everyone of our customers have commented on the difference. The house will retain its heat much longer, meaning that your boiler will be firing much less, resulting in significantly lower fuel bills! Research has shown that £45 of every £100 spend on heating your home escapes through the solid walls. 2. Can help to eradicate condensation by keeping the external walls warmer. 3. Improving the appearance of your home. A picture says a 1,000 words. Click or tap here to see some examples. The key features of External Wall Insullation are:
